Grant Burge Meshach Shiraz 2006
Grant Burge Meshach Shiraz 2006
Grant Burge Icon wines are named in honour of Meshach Burge, and the biblical origins of his name. The great grandfather of founder Grant Burge, he made the Barossa Valley home in 1855, beginning an enduring family winemaking tradition.
The award-winning Grant Burge Meshach is our flagship Shiraz, only released in vintages of outstanding quality, handpicked from near century old vines from the famed Barossa Valley. The fruit for this wine has tremendous concentration and intensity, making Meshach a powerful, yet beautifully balanced wine.
Winemaking with grapes from such old vines is kept simple. After crushing, the grapes were inoculated with yeast and remained in the open fermenters for between 8 to 10 days under careful observation. The fermenters were gently pumped over 2-3 times a day to start, with pump over times reduced as fermentation progressed, to slow tannin extraction and maintain balance. On completion of fermentation on skins, the wines were gently basket pressed and allowed to settle for 24 hours. The wines were then transferred into a combination of French and American oak for 21 months maturation prior to bottling, followed by bottle maturation for 3 years prior to release.
"The 2006 Meshach shows incredible depth and intensity of colour despite the wine being 5 years of age on release. There are powerful aromas of ripe blackberries, spiced plums and dark chocolate, along with delicate touches of mint, florals and raspberries. The palate is sumptuous with flavours of Swiss chocolate, savoury spices, raspberry fruit and a hint of red currants. The palate hits perfect balance between flavour, concentration and structure, with beautiful tannins and excellent length. This wine continues the proud history of Meshach.
As with previous vintages, the elegant 2006 vintage should be enjoyed on special occasions and will appeal to the collector in you. The Grant Burge Wines flagship Shiraz has an ageing potential of upwards of 20 years with careful cellaring."

"Very deep garnet-purple colored, the 2006 Meshach is still a little mute with a core of dark plum preserves and blackberries and hints of chocolate, hung meat, damp earth and cloves. The full bodied palate is still tightly knit with a solid structure of medium to firm very finely grained tannins and racy acid supporting the dense, muscular fruit, finishing long. It still needs time to open and marry and should drink best 2014 to 2024+."eRobertParker.com 96+ Points
