Stonegarden Eden Valley Grenache 2017
A combination of 2 Barossa legends coming together with fruit sourced from the famed Stonegarden vineyard in the Eden Valley and made by Rockford Chief Winemaker Ben Radford.
Plantings on the Stonegarden site stretch back into the 1800s are home to some of South Australia's most sought-after fruit. Classified as "ancestor" vine (125 years+) and limited production. The wines produced from this special piece of history are something to behold.
As is the case with the others featured on the site, the Grenache blocks contain a smattering of Mataro and Shiraz in various amounts, which add to the micro-terroir of each variation. With a forward fragrant opening of a rose petal-like note, here woven into darker spice elements, the old vines’ fine, earthy tannins in play from mid-palate onwards, while a richness and sweetness of deliciously ripe fruit sings loud and true. Decant for several hours at least to allow this to show at its very best.
Head Wines Ancestor Vine Grenache Mataro 2015
By following a traditional négociant model, an old practice, Head wines work with a number of small growers over having their own vineyards. In turn, all available time is dedicated to the winemaking.
The grapes that end up in the bottles are from the carefully selected, elevated vineyards, all of these sites are farmed sustainably using organic principles where possible; yields are controlled and grapes are hand-picked. Just 1000 bottles are produced
From Stonegarden, a 160 year old vineyard planted near Springton at 400m altitude in the coldest, driest and most remote part of the Eden Valley. The vines struggle to yield 1/2 ton/acre on sandy loam over yellow clay and granite. Some whole-bunches are utilised in the fermentation.
"159yo vines. 50% grenache, 50% mataro. 10% whole bunches. Immense concentration and yet the flavours are bell clear. This puts the super into premium. It bursts cherries and berries onto the palate and then stamps earth, spices and assorted petals all over. It's dry, serious and joyous at once. There's a whip crack of tannin and rockets of flavour through the finish." 97pts - Campbell Mattinson - Wine Companion
Massena Vineyards Stonegarden Eden Valley Grenache Mataro Shiraz 2017
Part of the elite group of wineries in the ‘Artisans of the Barossa’ cellar door, Jaysen Collins’ label Massena is a force to be reckoned with. After leaving his job at industry big dog Turkey Flat Jaysen started Massena in 2000 along with Dan Standish to produce wines that are in their own words “true to the Barossa style, being rich, warm and generous.”
Jaysen now makes all the wines himself, focusing on old vines in great vineyards and the range has gone from strength to strength. Jaysen Collins makes a small but very high quality range of wines from the famed Stonegarden vineyard in the Eden Valley.
Plantings on this sacred site stretch back into the 1800s. These old warhorse vines yield some of South Australia's most sought-after fruit. Single vineyard wine from the distinguished Stonegarden vineyard in the Eden Valley, with old vine heritage and limited production. The wines produced from this special piece of history are something to behold, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Riesling while singing their respective varietal character, have a common vineyard thread of beautiful aromatics and subtle minerality.
The historic Stonegarden planting of Grenache can contain a proportion of other varieties inter-planted amongst the bush vines. This wine was made using grapes sourced from a section of the Stonegarden property that contain a denser proportion of Mataro and Shiraz amongst the Grenache. Wild fermented with 100% whole bunch inclusion, then aged on lees in seasoned French oak puncheons for 12 months and bottled without fining or filtration.
